Mill Street Tavern in Mount Pleasant

This building has been many things over the years and we always thought it could be something really special, but or various reasons the efforts had always fallen short. Until now, that is.

Mill Street Tavern has created a unique and wonderful spot on Shem Creek. The location has always been perfect - set on the creek, away from the crowds, in a peaceful setting - and now the facility has been totally redecorated, remodeled and filled with the most unique pieces, eclectic, but tastefully done.  It has clean open dining areas, a cozy wonderful indoor bar and magnificent rooftop.  The weather was perfect so the rooftop is where we decided to spend our first visit.

The service was excellent.  We know lately many establishments have had a problem finding good staff but this crew did not disappoint.  From the warm welcome at the door to the smiles on all the staff’s faces, it was wonderful.  We were not the easiest customers but the manager and staff went out of their way to make sure we were able to get a table for 5 with some shade!

The food was also amazing.  Everything is incredibly fresh, healthy and has an interesting twist.  We started with an order of Ahi Tuna, Salsa and Mango served with plantain chips.  It was fresh and light with just a hint of heat and sweet.  Bob went for the Boneless Short Ribs and the side of Mac and Cheese.  The owners, who also own Crave in Mount Pleasant, are known for their Mac and Cheese that has been winning awards all over the Charleston area, so you can’t go wrong with that and the short ribs were tender and delicious. Mike had the pulled Pork Butt, which is slowly smoked for 12 hours and has the right amount of sweet and sour vinegar and excellent crispy edges.  He chose the Brussel sprouts to round out his meal, Mike said they were better than the ones he loved at another restaurant that shall remain nameless.  Kathi chose the grilled jumbo shrimp, to which she added faro and Brussel sprouts.  She said they were some of the best she had ever tasted.  I chose the Bowl and picked faro instead of quinoa and Shrimp as my protein, it also came with local vegetables, avocado, black beans, radishes and a side of their signature avocado lime vinaigrette.  It was a huge portion, but all blended together great.

They had a nice selection of drinks and we were told to save room for desert, but just couldn’t manage it.  They are open for brunch and dinner and will soon be adding a Happy Hour.  We look forward to returning for a Happy Hour and also, when the weather cools down, checking out that gorgeous inside bar.

The staff was friendly and very accommodating. Our only complaint was it took a long time to get the bill, for which they apologized repeatedly.  Maybe they just weren’t prepared for the rush on a lovely Saturday late afternoon.

Brunch at Mill Street

A week or so after we enjoyed dinner at Mill Street, we went back for brunch. We thought about sitting outside on the rooftop, but decided it was too warm, so we headed for the bar area. This proved to be just the right decision as it was uncrowded and we were ably served by the friendly bartender who introduced himself as "Couch." The draft beer selection was much better than on our first visit and the Bloody Marys were homemade and very tasty. The food was great and we definitely plan to go back.
